The Yokneam-Tivon Water Treatment Plant is owned by Ma’ayanot Ha’amakim Water Corporation and the Megiddo Regional Council. It uses a semi-extensive design, which includes two settling pools, two aerobic basins and a reservoir.

The wastewater treatment plant receives sanitary effluents and untreated industrial wastewater from Yokneam, Tivon and Yokne’am Moshava.

Average daily flow is 7,500 m3.

The accumulation of sludge leads to a drastic reduction in the quality of effluents leaving the facility.

The settling pools were almost completely blocked. The laboratory results showed that the treatment process did not occur as expected and the quality of effluents did not meet regulatory requirements.

It was necessary to remove the sludge and clean the pools, while preserving the walls of the basins, the plumbing systems, the basin cover, and more. it was also important to treat the sludge in order for it to comply with regulations.

Detailed process

  • Pumping the water by pump to the final treatment pool.
  • Designing and construction of two evaporation pools.
  • Removal of sludge, using a backhoe to transfer it to the evaporation pools (18,000 m3 of sludge were removed)
  • Loading the sludge onto trucks and transporting it to a compost site, where it is processed and recycled for various purposes.
  • A total of 4,000 tons of sludge were removed from the settling pools, followed by drying and pumping the remaining water.
